Handler Responsibilities
K9 handlers have a wide range of responsibilities, which can include:
Controlling or restraining an aggressive or dangerous suspect until backup arrives.
Maintaining safety and security in the community by patrolling neighbourhoods on foot or in a vehicle.
Training with their canine partner to maintain their skills in scent detection, tracking, and other specialized tasks.
Observing suspicious individuals or activities and reporting them to the appropriate authorities.
Interacting with other officers to coordinate strategies for responding to incidents.
Interviewing witnesses and suspects to obtain information about crimes.
Performing search and rescue operations using a dog’s acute sense of smell to locate missing persons or evidence of criminal activity.
Working with drug enforcement agencies to conduct narcotics searches using drug-sniffing dogs.
Interacting with prosecutors to prepare cases for trial.
